LISA Is no more!

After many complaings from other collegues about LISA database not appearing. and at the request of my supervisor to look for resources on LISA database. i had to act and try to find out why we cant see LISA in the database list any more.

Yesterday morning i went to Mr. Tareq Office in Jaber AL-Ahmed library with a brave heart to let me enter LISA database. but i found out that even Tareq dont know what is the problem and where is LISA. so i headed to MR Wael Matar Office, he is a great guy and great help as he is the head of information serivces there and he is reponsable for comunication with the company that provide the databases to Kuwait University. he was shocked that i did not graduate yet and i told him that i dont want to gradutae now because i like it to much here in KUNIV. any way, when i explaned the probelm to him he was surbrised and checked himself and LISA was alos not there. he made some phone calls here and there then there was the surbrise. It seems that the University did not pay the yearly subscription to the vendor. and some paper work has to be done. and its going to take a cuble of week for LISA to appear again .

UPDATE: if you dont know what is LISA, its Library and Information Science Abstracts. (LISA) is a valuable reference tool for current awareness in information sciences. Comprehensive coverage allows access to past, present, and ongoing developments in librarianship, information science, online retrieval, new information technologies, and publishing. LISA includes abstracting and indexing of 500 periodicals (dating from 1969) from over 60 countries along with unpublished academic and institutional research from the Current Research in Library and Information Science Database (since 1981).

  1. Now this is shocking news! Kuwait University Libraries has not paid for the database subscriptions?

Is KU being hit by the credit crunch? :p Lol

All I can say is thank goodness for students like you who actually use the database

  2. Today I had a discussion with Dr. Hussien about this issue in class.

He mentioned that the problem is not of concerns with Kuwait University’s management.

The issue is about providing the funds from the ministry of finance, which has been delayed for almost 2 months right now.

I hope this issue sees the light very soon, coz most of us are working with their comprehensive exams.

  3. Funding from the Ministry of Finance? Why?

What happened to the Kuwait University library budget?

And does this mean that all online journals and databases are affected at KULA?

  4. Its just that the subscription for LISA was Due, and Kuwait did not pay. and when other Databases subscription date will come also Kuwait wont pay. Kuwait university budget is for internal financing only. if the university want to buy something from outside Kuwait or inside then Diwan AL-Mohasaba should approve it. AL-Diwan is the one responsible for delaying LISA subscription fees. All the ministries in kuwait have their own budgets but they cant manage it alone. Diwan AL-Mohasaba should aprove every purchase at the end. if there was no Diwan then every ministry finance department will have a big party because the manager of these departments will be filthy rich.

  5. TO my knowledge, subscriptions to databases, electronic journals, and text journals all must go first through the concerned department in the Kuwait University libraries administration.

They are the supervising body who follow up orders, arrivals, function, and subscriptions. They are the ones responsible for getting the orders in at the correct time.

Scientific journals and databases take a huge chunk out of the annual library budget so any good administration must accommodate all anticipated orders WELL ahead of time for continuity and smooth running of the subscription process.

  6. I can imagine the guys in Diwan AL_Muhasaba saying: what the hell is a database? why are we approving all this money to something no body uses?” dont you think this is what happens in there? as you said “subscriptions to databases, electronic journals, and text journals all must go first through the concerned department in the Kuwait University libraries administration.” but at the end Diwan AL-Muhasba must approve the payment. maybe its the mistake of the University that they did not enroll it earlier, it could be.

  7. I rest my case lol

I hope matters get straightened out at KULA for the sake of the students and researchers with regards to databases.

Since you guys are master’s students, you have first hand access to all the problems that face libraries right there at KU

    Worth an investigation I think
