Inspirational Speech by Dr. Randy Pausch On the Oprah Winfrey Show: The Last Lecture

Dear students and colleagues,

I wanted to share this inspirational speech by Dr. Randy Pausch ( ) with you all. Dr. Pausch was one of the well known professors at Carnegie Melon University ( ).  He was suffering from  a pancreatic cancer and died in July 25 2008.  He is one of the persons who are alive, influencing  and impacting people everyday with motivational and inspirational stories. You may ask yourself why I wanted to share this with you at this time!?  it’s very simple, some of you are disappointed from the grade they took “like me”, some are frustrated and don’t know what’s going to happen after their graduation “maybe like you”, or even someone who already graduated but is suffering in away or another.  I just wanted to say to you KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Don’t ever let someone put you down.  We are all human, there are ups and downs, but always try to motivate yourself, try to live everyday and enjoy every moment with your friends, family and people you love.  Opportunities abound, so learn from it.  I want you to read between the lines.  Dr. Pausch has published a book called “The last lecture”  I haven’t bought it yet, but I’m pretty sure it has so many motivational stories.  If you have enough time, watch the full lecture which he gave for his students and colleagues at Carnegie Melon University .  He also gave a fabulous lecture about “Time Management” at the University of Virginia.  If you are interested to read more about him, just type in the keyword Randy Pausch in google search and do the same in youtube and you’re going to find a lot of motivational and inspirational speeches.

One of his quotes  “The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out; the brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. The brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They are there to stop the other people!”

My advice for you is “Never let your title, your degree, your grade or even ANYONE put you down!”

  1. Thank you Talal for your words and for this post we really need it. I like Dr.Randys’ advices..
Let your kids express their creativity
    Dont complain
If you ive your life probably dreams will come to you..
Talal you know what, sometimes even when your dearms become true you dont feel the happiness that you expected 😦

  2. His story is so motivational. A couple of years ago I downloaded his speech to a flash drive so I could show it to my students. They were so inspired and wanted to write to him. I hated to tell them that he had passed away. I only hope I can have his strength and positive attitude at the end of my life.

  3. Talal, thank you for reminding us of this inspiration video. I posted this video before Randy death on April:

It was amazing to see this guy and you wouldn’t believe that he would really die in a couple of months.

Fatma, I guess you are right some how. You see, when you achieve your dreams, your dreams gets bigger and you are no more satisfied. you return to point Zero and start achieving another dream. I guess that is called “ambition ” 🙂

Aysha, Its good that you cried. It means that you got the message. I dont know why people hate crying ?

Deb. When you watch a man dedicating his last days on earth to the service of others, you have to admire him. He was an inspiration for many people. Also to know that he is gonna day soon and instead of retreating and think more about himself, he start motivating people and try to take advantage of the remaining day to make other happy and live a healthy life, that is just “superb”.

Talal, thank you again. And please remember our talk last night. keep on inspiring people and don’t stop. Don’t wait any thing from any one and don’t let anything discourage you. You are the best in this.

  4. Aisha, as mohammad said, it’s good that you cried because it means that it touched your heart.

Deb, thanks for your comment. You know here in Kuwait, we miss that part where our teachers use motivational and inspirational videos to motivate and inspire their students. Keep going, and kindly share with us any video clip, quotes and so on. Very glad to hear from you Deb.

Mohammad, I think the best thing is to have the post in the right time! don’t you agree with me!?

Moh, I will do that. As you know I believe that the most important thing is self development. We need to develop ourselves, we need to motivate and inspire others to achieve their goals. Don’t worry Moh, I will do that for the rest of my life inshalah.

Rhoda Lafuze, I think God bless the communication channels between Oprah, and between you and us. TV, internet, youtube are all tools that helped us communicate with each other and share our thoughts. I’m very sad to hear that Oprah will stop her show. Rhoda, thanks for your comment.
