The Hay-on-Wye annual festival is the premier literary festival in Britain, and the village itself is a mecca for book lovers from all over the world. Most of Hay-on-Wye is dedicated to the book trade, with over thirty shops selling every kind of book from every period. The Hay Festival of Literature and the Arts is held over ten days at the end of May each year and is now a major national event, growing from around a thousand visitors in 1987 to over 150,000 today. Hay-on-Wye also holds a traditional market every Thursday in Memorial Square.
