The SLA/AGC 17th Annual Conference Review 2011

Dear All

As being part of the Board Member of the SLA/AGC Association I would like to express my views of the conference that took place in Muscat, Oman between the 8-10th March 2011.

Oman The Wonderful Place

What a magnificent, scenic, and fascinating place to visit. A clean and quite country you will see, decent and well-bred people you will meet, and clear and tranquil weather you will enjoy. I have enjoyed visiting Oman for the first time in life. visiting different heritage places and enjoying the nature of Muscat were great experience I had. Also were blessed living in Al Bustan Palace hotel, which was centered in the middle of Al Qantab beautiful mountains.

Dramatic and stylish Hotel, that combines the past and the future in its design, although I hated the way it has been constructed. You will feel like in a MAZE, each elevators would left you to a different places.. I took 3 days to understand the trick 🙂 and then felt frustrated finding the right halls and sessions rooms all the way.. but overall it was challenging and a quite place that has a shopping center and around 3 different international restaurants. of course one of the beautiful things I loved about the hotel is its thrilling room view, where the palms, ocean, and mountains are surrounding you from everywhere.. come and have a look!!!

The SLA/AGC Conference

Well, the conference were great in many ways. unfortunately I couldn’t attend all the keynote speakers or sessions due to my different obligations within the conference.

First, I would like to present my grateful thankfulness to the organizing committee that have been working for months for the conference. Second, I would say “Thank you” for all the Omani people who were more than hospitable and warmhearted with all of us.

The conference had around 71 accepted papers presented in different sessions, I had the pleasure to meet some of our old friends such as Fadhel, Sakeena, and Lulwah, where she conducted a great paper about Information Seeking Behaviour, That reminded me of Mumtaz Class 2.5 years ago..

I had to evaluate two sessions, because we needed to choose “Best Paper” and award the participant at the end. The funny thing is that in the two sessions I attended, Fadhel and Sakeena were in one, and Lulwah were in the other 🙂 .

Unfortunately, I wanted to meet with our sister Wadha Al Ajmi but I couldn’t, because I was busy between the board members meeting, the student award committee and the exhibitions vendors meetings requests, which I hope that she has done very well in her session, because she really deserve it.

Of course meeting your old friends and colleagues makes you happy, but I think for some people this issue is kind of selective if you know what I mean.. it was annoying a little bit for me to see people who have used you before for their own benefits and today they completely forgetting you.. I would say to those people cheer up and take things easy because life is like a circle you never know what will happen.. (والله يبعدنا عن الحساد) 🙂

On the other hand, I was so blessed by the warm welcome and greetings from our friend such as Lulwah, Waheed from KISR and Mohammed bo Abbas from springer, as well as Ameen from Sage (BTW Mohammed he says HI to you) and other people from the region I really do appreciate their kindness and humbleness.

د. القلاف: تطوير «علوم المكتبات» بما يتناسب مع سوق العمل

انشئ برنامج علوم المكتبات والمعلومات سنة 1996، وفي عام 2002 انضم البرنامج الى كلية العلوم الاجتماعية حيث أصبح أحد أقسامها

وأوضحت رئيسة قسم علم المكتبات والمعلومات بكلية العلوم الاجتماعية د.شارلين القلاف ان القسم يقدم درجة الماجستير في علوم المكتبات والمعلومات حيث ان هذه الدرجة متخصصة في ادارة وتنظيم وتقديم الخدمات المعلوماتية، مشيرة الى ان القسم العلمي يطرح شعب كافية للطلبة وذلك لضمان تخرجهم بالوقت المناسب، موضحة ان القسم يطرح مقررات كافية للتخصص المساند

واشارت الى ان للقسم خطة واضحة لزيادة أعضاء هيئة التدريس والتي نعمل على تنفيذها كما ان لديهم العديد من المبتعثين لدرجة الدكتوراه وبانتظار انضمامهم للقسم

وافادت اننا لا نعتبر ان قسم علوم المكتبات والمعلومات من الاقسام المهمشة في كلية العلوم الاجتماعية وذلك بسبب ان للقسم وجودا ومشاركة ملحوظة في جميع أنشطة الكلية، كما ان قسم علوم المكتبات والمعلومات لديه أنشطة عديدة على مستوى الكلية والجامعة والمجتمع، فالعديد من أعضاء هيئة التدريس يقومون بعمل الدورات التدريبية وورش العمل للجهات المختلفة داخل وخارج الكويت

:جاء ذلك خلال اللقاء الذي اجرته «الوطن» معها وفيما يلي نصه

هل لنا بنبذة عن قسم المكتبات والمعلومات؟  –

– تم انشاء برنامج علوم المكتبات والمعلومات سنة 1996 تحت مظلة كلية الدراسات العليا بتقديم درجة الماجستير في علوم المكتبات والمعلومات وفي عام 2002 انضم البرنامج الى كلية العلوم الاجتماعية حيث أصبح أحد أقسامها. وفي عام 2004 بدأ القسم بتقديم التخصص المساند للطلبة. وتوافقا مع رسالة جامعة الكويت وتجاوبا مع تأثير المعلومات والتكنولوجيا على مجتمعنا، يهدف قسم علوم المكتبات والمعلومات الى اعداد الطلبة بالمهارات اللازمة ليكونوا مهنيين ومتخصصين في مجال المعلومات والتكنولوجيا المتعلق بذلك. كما يهدف القسم الى تقديم الأبحاث الخاصة بذلك المجال والتي تتناسب مع اهتماماتنا المحلية والاقليمية، وبذلك يساهم القسم مساهمة قيمة في التطور المحلي والاقليمي لنظم المكتبات والمعلومات وخدماتها

ما الدرجات العلمية التي يقدمها القسم؟  –

– ان الهدف الرئيسي للقسم هو تقديم درجة الماجستير في علوم المكتبات والمعلومات حيث ان هذه الدرجة متخصصة في ادارة وتنظيم وتقديم الخدمات المعلوماتية. والى جانب ذلك، يقدم القسم التخصص المساند في الدراسات المعلوماتية والذي تم توسيع نطاق القبول فيه على مستوى الجامعة بحيث يمكن للطلبة في مختلف الكليات والتخصصات التسجيل والانضمام الى هذا التخصص والذي سوف يمكن من تحسين مستوى استخدامهم لمصادر وتقنيات المعلومات وذلك في فترة دراسة تخصصهم الرئيسي وفي حياتهم المهنية

لماذا حتى الآن لم يتحول قسم المعلومات الى تخصص رئيسي حتى الآن؟  –

– ان مهنة اخصائي المعلومات تتطلب درجة الماجستير وذلك تماشيا مع المقاييس والممارسات العالمية لهذه المهنة ولهذا فقد بدأ القسم ببرنامج الماجستير ومن ثم قدم التخصص المساند ونحن نعمل دائما على تطوير القسم بما يتناسب مع حاجة مراكز العمل

هناك تذمر من قبل الطلبة لقلة الشعب المطروحة من قبل القسم؟  –

– على مستوى الماجستير، يطرح القسم العلمي شعبا كافية للطلبة وذلك لضمان تخرجهم بالوقت المناسب، كما ان القسم يطرح مقررات كافية للتخصص المساند. بالاضافة الى مقرر خدمة لجميع طلبة العلوم الاجتماعية والذي من خلاله يتم اكساب الطلبة المهارات اللازمة في البحث العلمي واستخدام الحاسب الالي. وعلى الرغم من ان أعداد الطلبة تتزايد عاما بعد عام الا أننا نحاول استيعابهم جميعا في المقررات المطروحة

هل هناك خطة لزيادة عدد اعضاء هيئة التدريس؟  –

– نعم نحن لدينا خطة واضحة لزيادة أعضاء هيئة التدريس والتي نعمل على تنفيذها. كما ان لدينا العديد من المبتعثين لدرجة الدكتوراه وبانتظار انضمامهم للقسم. هذا بالاضافة الى أننا نضع بعين الاعتبار الاساتذة الزائرين لسد أي نقص في المقررات الدراسية اذا تطلب الوضع

ما الانشطة التي يقدمها القسم خارج نطاق المحاضرات؟  –

– ان قسم علوم المكتبات والمعلومات لديه أنشطة عديدة على مستوى الكلية والجامعة والمجتمع، فالعديد من أعضاء هيئة التدريس يقومون بعمل الدورات التدريبية وورش العمل للجهات المختلفة داخل وخارج الكويت، هذا بالاضافة الى مشاركة الكثير منهم في الندوات والمحاضرت داخل وخارج الجامعة. كما لدى العديد منهم أبحاث لمواضيع عديدة وفي مجالات مختلفة يتم تقديمها في المؤتمرات المحلية والدولية، على سبيل المثال وليس حصريا: القضايا الاجتماعية وتكنولوجيا المعلومات، التكنولوجيا وتطور الخدمات الحكومية، وادارة المعرفة.كما ان للقسم مشاركات عديدة في المعارض المختلفة داخل الجامعة

ما رأيكم بتقنية التدريس عن بعد؟  –

– تعتبر تقنية التدريس عن بعد من أهم الأمور التي نؤمن بها في القسم ونعمل على تفعيلها في المقررات الدراسية. ويستخدم أعضاء هيئة التدريس بالقسم نظام البلاك بورد الذي توفره الجامعة في مقرراتهم الدراسية. ويتمتع هذا النظام بالعديد من المواصفات والمزايا التي تخدم العملية التدريسية وتعزز مفهوم التعليم عن بعد من خلال تواصل الطلبة مع عضو هيئة التدريس عبر هذا النظام

نلاحظ كثرة الطالبات بالقسم بشكل كبير عن الطلبة؟ ما السبب؟  –

ان اعداد الطالبات في الجامعة أكثر من أعداد الطلبة بشكل عام ولكن لاحظنا في الفترة الأخيرة زيادة أعداد الطلبة الذكور في التخصص المساند واهتمامهم للانضمام له

2011 Science-Technology Division & Arabian Gulf Chapter Student Award
to attend Special Libraries Association (SLA) Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, 12 – 15 June 2011

In 2011 SLA Arabian Gulf Chapter will be offering an Award jointly with Science-Technology Division (DST) of SLA.

The successful applicant will receive an award of US$2,000, towards the cost of attending the 2011 SLA Annual Conference (which includes conference registration, accommodation, and economy return airfare to Philadelphia, PA).

The award will be formally acknowledged at the SLA Conference in Philadelphia at the Science-Technology Division’s Awards Ceremony.

Eligibility:

Applicants must:

  • Have an excellent command of written and spoken English,
  • Be enrolled in a Master level LIS programme in Arabian Gulf countries during the current academic year
  • Be eligible to travel to the USA
  • Be interested in a career in special librarianship, preferably with a focus on working in a science and technology environment.
  • Be a first-time attendee at an SLA conference

Application Procedure

1. Please write a two-part essay, in English, of a total of approximately 500 words, which:

  1. Tells us why you chose to enrol in a graduate/master LIS programme and what you hope to do with your degree and especially why you might wish to work in the science and technology area, and
  2. Addresses one of the following three topics:
  • What skills must the new information professional possess and why?
  • What is the biggest challenge facing the profession, in general, and information professionals in your country, in particular?
    • What benefits/knowledge do you hope to gain from attending the 2011 SLA conference? (Do not describe what you will do during the conference).
  1. Include a letter of recommendation, from your programme advisor or an SLA member who knows you well, which explains why you would be a good candidate for this award.
  1. Include a copy of your current CV including your postal, and email addresses and telephone number.
  1. Please prepare all documents in Microsoft Word and send by e-mail no later than                         15 February 2011 to the following two people:
  2. i.    Sultan Al-Daihani, SLA Arabian Gulf Chapter at s.aldaihani@ku.edu.kw and to
  1. ii.    Sheila Rosenthal, Chair of the DST Awards Committee at  slr@sei.cmu.edu

The Award winner will be notified by 20 February 2011.

Post Award Requirements

The recipient of the 2011 Science-Technology Division / Arabian Gulf Chapter Student Award will be:

  1. Required to write a brief article on their conference experience for publication in the September / October 2011 issue of the Science-Technology Division’s newsletter,             Sci-Tech News, and for the SLA Arabian Gulf Chapter’s website
  1. Asked to maintain contact with the SLA Arabian Gulf Chapter Board during the year of their Award.
  1. Asked to serve on a Science-Technology Division Committee of their choice.

Online Information, London 2010

In a previous post, our brother Mohammad has posted something about the trip that we were together attending the 2010 online information conference in UK. The conference was more than great in terms of tracks and sessions, seminars and workshops, and finally the exhibitions and the cafeteria that we didn’t have anything from it 🙂 . I was fully sponsored by the SAGE publisher the 4th biggest vendor in the information industry world to attend the conference. so thank you SAGE for your hospitality.

Yesterday I was again with two lovely teachers Dr. Samir and Dr. Taghreed. we had a great time talking about many things, one of them was the conference. so that Dr. Taghreed asked me to post something in the blog and if anyone interested in any information regarding the sessions I will be a big help. And Dr. Samir also was advising me what to write, so that I have legal content that no one would accuse Mohammed and shutdown his blog hehehe…

Anyway, the conference is the largest UK event dedicated to the information industry, providing an annual meeting place for more than 9,000 attendees from over 40 countries across the globe.  This unique free-to-attend event consists of an exhibition with more than 200 international exhibitors, an extensive educational show floor seminar programme, plus a range of exciting and stimulating show features.  Focusing on new technologies and key sectors,  the show covers 6 different subject areas: Content Resources, ePublishing Solutions, Library Management, Content Management, Search Solutions and Social Media.

Attending around 6 sessions from different tracks, was something great that added to my humble knowledge so many. accordingly, I wish to share with you any of the information that it would be beneficial to your area of interest. you may find all tracks and sessions in here or in PDF and you may email me for any inquiries in regard to those sessions and their papers.

Im a member in SLA

Yesterday, i became a member of SLA-Arabian Gulf Chapter. Dont ask me why or what’s the use, i dont know I just wanted to become part of something. And to tell you truth while i was in the conference in London everyone was asking me if I was affiliated with an organization or an association related to our field, and i wasn’t.

Actually it was easy and didn’t take me more than 10 seconds. I didn’t expect it to be that easy!  “I come from an organization and total culture of paper work and time consuming world”. Just key your basic info and choose Arabian Gulf Chapter from SLA web site. For the fees I chose a full membership with salary less than 18000 USD, the fess will be not more than 40 USD.
