Im a member in SLA

Yesterday, i became a member of SLA-Arabian Gulf Chapter. Dont ask me why or what’s the use, i dont know I just wanted to become part of something. And to tell you truth while i was in the conference in London everyone was asking me if I was affiliated with an organization or an association related to our field, and i wasn’t.

Actually it was easy and didn’t take me more than 10 seconds. I didn’t expect it to be that easy!  “I come from an organization and total culture of paper work and time consuming world”. Just key your basic info and choose Arabian Gulf Chapter from SLA web site. For the fees I chose a full membership with salary less than 18000 USD, the fess will be not more than 40 USD. Put your Credit card information and you will a full member in a matter of seconds.

Finally, My Master degree registered

After running around like crazy for more than six months, making copies of my master degree like crazy, going to the civil services more than 20 times, losing my official letter to and from the civil services more than once “by them”, responding to the ministry with the wrong answer sometimes in their letters. Finally I got my master degree registered in the Civil services Automation system and its now in the computer. Graduated on June and finished on December! Congratulate me 🙂

P.Mumtaz Ali Anwar

I sent an email for our dear P.Mumtaz regarding our visit to London. It seems that i’ve sent the email message to the wrong email address. This was his responce:

Salaam,
I never opened this mail after I left Kuwait. I saw this address in my drawer today as I was searching for something else. I found several messages in my inbox.
I read the postings in your blog and was glad to see Saleh’s photo. I am glad that you are pursuing your ambition. I am sure you will succeed. You need to pay visit to Malaysia also. If you go there, see Prof. Zainab in the University of Malaya.
Please pass my good wishes to all of your friends and use  gomabk_98@yahoo.com for contacting me in future.
Best wishes again,
Mumtaz Anwar
Dear P.Mumtaz, Thank you for your kind words and i hope you visit us one day in Kuwait.

My presentation at Kuwait University

Today was presentation day. I was invited by Dr.Samir Hamade to give a presentation about my blogging experience in class 506. Went there at 6 Pm in college of Social Sciences in Kuwait University in Shuaikh, Same place I used to take my classes in my master years, lap 111. The class was full of females, not even one guy was present there.

The main to topic of the presentation is our blog LISKW. How? When? Why? Which was interesting topic for me and a chance to let the new students feel the importance of sharing and managing information as its badly needed for their study. Sharing is the essence of success. And the experience of the blog for 3 years is a good proof.

The presentation went smoothly as I expected. Instead of 30 minutes agreed on by Dr.Samir I ended my presentation in 60 minutes. Too much discussion was in between slides. And as progressed through slides I could see the topic was getting more interest in the student’s eyes. Although Dr.Samir did put the blog on the glass yahoo group for the students to visit, it seems that most of the students didn’t go deep to search and see the older posts. They were amazed at the end when I demonstrated the kind of useful information related to the discipline and their assignment that can be found with a little bit of search.

What I noticed in the class is that most of the students were just as lost as we were in our first semester in the master program. They were keen to know how to do everything. Assignments, answer exams, participate in the blog, use the databases, and much more. That’s why our discussion went 40 minutes after the presentation.

My advice to them was to collaborate and try for from a study group as we did before. Two heads are always better than one. I offered my blog to be a starting point for their discussion. I even advised them to form their own blog so they can share as we shared.

The presentation was great, for me at least :).  It was a great chance to get back in shape and refresh my presentation skills and I’m very grateful for Dr.Samir for giving me the chance to participate in his class. I will do it again any time for any other class if requested.

A great teacher, grate students, modest presenter, and interesting topic. What more could you ask for?

Me, Slaleh, & The Book Fair

I went to the recent book fair twice this time. None of them were on my own well. The first visit was with Dear friend Saleh who insisted on visiting the book fair although I insisted on not going. To tell you the truth I have been going each past year and I keep buying very interesting books that I don’t read. I have a long list of overdue readings that I came to the conclusion that I won’t be able to keep up with. So I managed to make a first quick visit without buying anything. (I don’t know if I should be proud or ashamed!)

The second visit with my wife was also against my well as she keep visiting each year, buying novels, and reading every night, good for her. This time my second son was with us so I managed to make an excuse and run with him trying to locate something good for him and spend the time. I managed to escape this time with minimum lose as i only bought a small book for .500 fils for me. And all the rest of the buying went to my kinds and wife.

One more thing I must mention, in my second visit I came across our old friend Yasser. You can’t find an occasion related to Libraries, books, or literature without catching Yasser there 🙂
